Impact of Changing Cultures on Dimple’s Psyche: A Study of Bharati Mukherjee’s Wife
Abstract
The paper scrutinizes a multiplicity of troubles, cultural changes and the psychological stress that occur in the life of an ordinary woman. Mukherjee‟s Wife stands as a unique fictional work by virtue, snooping into female protagonist‟s psyche. Dimple, the protagonist of Wife, is the perfect example of the desolation of women in India. She suffers due to the non-responsive attitude of her husband. The important aspect which Mukherjee highlights in her novels is a woman‟s role in the repression and suffering of her fellow woman. Psychology is the scientific and systematic study of the human mind and behavior, examples of which are accumulated by literature through the centuries. Thus psychology and literature ally with one another. Bharati Mukherjee dealt with the dark depths of psychosis by creating sensitive characters in their moments of intense mental struggle leading to neurosis.
